How to Clean Toilet Bowl Stains With Bleach

The toilet is an area of the home that requires regular cleaning, as stains and residue quickly buildup and leave the toilet looking unattractive. Chlorine bleach is a common cleaning product and works well in not only cleaning the toilet, but also stain removal when heavy buildup develops. To remove the stains, properly dilute the bleach in your toilet bowl and let it stand for a short period of time.

Instructions

  • Fill the toilet with 1/2 cup bleach and scrub with your toilet brush. Repeat this procedure weekly and flush the toilet. Often, this is all that is required to remove light stains and buildup. By cleaning weekly, you keep buildup at a minimum.
  • Pour about 2 cups bleach into the toilet bowl and let it sit for one hour for heavier stains. This gives the bleach enough time to penetrate the stains and lift residue.
  • Scrub the toilet with your toilet bowl brush and flush the toilet. Repeat as needed until all the stains are removed.
  • Tips & Warnings

    • The University of Tennesee states, "Never combine chlorine bleach with household cleaners. This can make poison fumes that are deadly."

    • Never use chlorine bleach with ammonia.
