How to Treat Ear Mites in Dogs

Ear mites are pests that can infect a dog's ears and make the poor dog feel uncomfortable. A dog may have itchy ears as a result of ear mites. Fortunately diagnosis and treatment is not difficult. With a bit of help your doggy can feel much better very soon.

Instructions

  • First make sure that you dog has ear mites. You can do this by having a close up look at your dog's ears. If you see tiny little bugs scurrying about as you look at the dog's ears or if you see a black discharge that looks unpleasant and is clearly bothering the dog you can be sure your dog probably has ear mites.
  • Next wash your dog's ears to make sure that you can apply the treatment for the ear mites effectively. Gently dip a cloth in moist warm water and a bit of dishwashing detergent and wash the dog's ears carefully. Pet the dog as you tackle his ears. Consider a doggy treat to help the pet remain calm during your ministrations.
  • Dry the ears carefully with a clean piece of cloth. You should allow the dog's ears to dry for at least half an hour before you apply any treatment for ear mites on their ears. The area needs to be completely clean and dry for the treatment to work effectively on the ear mites.
  • Apply topical medication to the infected area. The medication should be applied with a clean cloth and remain on as instructed by the package direction. More than one course of treatment may be necessary to help cure your dog's ear mites.
  • Tips & Warnings

    • If you are uncomfortable doing this procedure yourself you can have your vet treat your dog's ear mites for you.

    • Treat other household pets as well. Ear mites are contagious.
