Roundup is a systemic herbicide used primarily to control weeds and grasses. The active ingredient in Roundup, glyphosate, has also been tested on Chinese tallow trees, as a way to control this invasive species. Both foliar spraying and frill girdle treatment help to eradicate Chinese tallow in the landscape. Foliar spraying defoliates the tree, preventing it from carrying on photosynthesis. The tree eventually loses vigor and may die. For trees with trunks over 4 inches in diameter, frill girdle treatment is more effective. The tree will absorb the herbicide systemically, which kills the plant.
