The International System of Units, or metric system, is the preferred unit of scientific measurement in the United States and throughout much of the world. The base unit of measurement for length is the meter. The meter is divided into 10 equal units known as decimeters, each decimeter can then be divided into 10 equidistant centimeters, and each centimeter is divided into 10 equal millimeters. One thousand millimeters is then equal to one meter, allowing a measurement to be made to within 1/1,000th of a meter.
